Swadhaar Associate Program

The Swadhaar Associate Program (SAP) provides an opportunity to work in a grass-roots organisation and gain first-hand exposure to the microfinance industry. The combination of hands-on fieldwork and international work experience in a developing economy makes for an ideal stepping-stone to a graduate program in such diverse fields as finance, development, economics and anthropology, among others. An Associateship at Swadhaar not only enhances one’s understanding of how MFIs function on a day-to-day basis, but also offers the dual benefit of experiencing both the financial and social initiative side of the business while providing valuable insights into the industry at large.

The Program:
Swadhaar takes on Associates at any time of the year. The Associates are assigned a mentor under whom they work on a variety of projects. If an Associate expresses interest in a particular area of the business, projects may be tailored to focus on a more specific agenda. Associates have the opportunity of working in one of the following focus areas:

  • Marketing
  • Product Development
  • Operations
  • Finance
  • Strategy
  • Business Analytics
The program is designed for a minimum period of 1 year but may be extended, subject to performance and available opportunities.

What’s in it for you:
1. An opportunity to work closely on myriad projects with senior management
2. Firsthand knowledge of the market through fieldwork in slums and interaction with clients
3. Insight into the inner workings of an urban MFI, including a range of areas from research and marketing to operations and strategy
4. Exposure to the type of social initiative work – financial education, savings facilitation, insurance – that Swadhaar engages in
5. Access to the industry network

A stipend is available as per prevailing policy; information available on request.

What some of SAP’s alumni have to say:
"Working at Swadhaar was a stimulating and formative experience. Every member of the Head Office team invested time in me and was incredibly keen to teach and guide me in my work. The exposure I gained to microfinance through challenging and real responsibilities far surpassed my expectations. The time I spent at Swadhaar has definitely stuck with me and is the motivating force behind my plans to pursue a career in microfinance.”
- Lara Gidvani, November 2008

"I had a life-changing experience, spending over a year at Swadhaar. Working on business development initiatives for savings and insurance products, I not only learned about doing business in India, but also fulfilled my dream of helping to alleviate poverty. Swadhaar offers an exciting start up environment in the fast-paced world of microfinance."
- Binaka Shah Sankaran, November 2008

"On realising I wanted to switch careers and join the field of international development, I quit my job as a technology analyst in a financial services bank and moved back to India. I knew I wanted to work with a legitimate company that had a clear view of its mission. I also wanted to work with smart, talented people who were passionate about their work and truly believed in their cause. I found all of this and more at Swadhaar. The entire team is focused on providing the best possible solutions to industry challenges — from creating innovative products that are sought by our clients to providing a healthy work environment."
- Yaquta Kanchwala, October 2008
