the word Swadhaar means
and is the reflection of the company’s mission to make available responsible and efficient financial services to economically vulnerable and underserved urban households, enabling them to attain financial security and meet their aspirations.
The Swadhaar group of entities (Swadhaar) headquartered in Mumbai comprise Swadhaar FinServe Pvt. Ltd. (SFPL), Swadhaar Information and Management Services (SIMS) and Swadhaar FinAccess (SFA), with the common objective of bringing financial services to the unserved and under-served segments in India.
SFPL and SIMS are the operating entities and distributors of financial services, as Business Correspondents. SIMS is a wholly owned subsidiary of SFPL.
SFA is a non-profit company (incorporated under Section 25 of The Companies Act) and primarily provides financial education and training to build capacity of low income households to better use financial products as well as enhance livelihoods.
Swadhaar saw its beginnings in 2005, through SFA the non –profit entity, offering micro-credit in Mumbai. It was amongst the earliest initiatives in providing micro credit to the economically active urban poor and low income households as well as micro entrepreneurs in India. SFPL started operations in 2008 as a Non-Banking Financial Company (NBFC), taking over the micro credit portfolio of SFA and subsequently converting to an NBFC-MFI in 2010. In 2013, SIMS commenced business as a Business Correspondent (BC) for RBL Bank (previously Ratnakar Bank Limited) primarily distributing micro credit for joint liability groups.
In 2015, SFPL made an application to the Reserve Bank of India, to voluntarily surrender its NBFC status and operate as a Business Correspondent, thereby enabling the provision of a full suite of financial products to its target segments. The order from RBI de-registering SFPL as an NBFC was received in January 2016.
SFA now focuses solely on credit-plus products and services, including financial education, insurance and savings facilitation.
